Useful tips on adding your website to DMOZ or why it takes months to be listed

Have you ever watched and wondered just how those Google search results come up so quickly? It is as if by magic, that it seems somehow to almost completely understand just what you are looking for.

Not only that, it also gives you some alternative search phrases too! The answer of course, is that magic plays no part in this, although there is some magical programming behind it all no doubt. It is simply that those websites in the results have been constructed using excellent SEO techniques right from the start. Google`s central mission is to deliver the correct answers to its customers in the quickest possible time and any website promotion that allows it to read content easily and quickly will be given the best Google search results. This is because through correct and optimised SEO techniques Google understands the relevancy of the site`s content in relation to any search query and can then rank it in importance.

So, how can your website promotion benefit from high Google search results? There many factors in getting search spiders to crawl your site effectively, but the three most important ones are relevant links, relevant links and more relevant links. The more sites that link to your site website promotion the better as long as those sites contain content that is relevant to your site. Google looks for this first and foremost and determines that if there are many websites linking to you on a specific subject then your site must be important around that subject.

One of the ways to ensure that your site starts to get `link juice` is by submitting it to the open directory project DMOZ (which actually stands for Directory Mozilla). This directory is held in high regard by Google, as well as the other main search engines and the higher you can be listed in DMOZ the better your website promotion will fare. However, getting your listing to appear is quite another matter as many people have found out. Every website that is listed in the directory is manually reviewed by volunteer community editors for quality and relevance before it is listed, so patience is a virtue.

You might even find that they have amended your initial submission to read better within DMOZ. The directory is made up of categories and those categories are broken down into regions, so the most important element of your DMOZ submission must be to ensure that the categories you choose (you are allowed two – a regional and a normal category) accurately represent your website`s operating sector or field of expertise. This is very important because any website submitted that bears no relevance to the chosen category will be rejected. Secondly, once you have your correct categories you need to create a highly relevant title and description and this is where your SEO techniques come in. You must avoid obvious commercial phrases so just pick on a description that accurately represents your website promotion and for a title, just use your site`s business name.

To begin with, just submit your site to a regional category and if and when it is listed successfully, you can then simply paste the existing information into the normal category and resubmit.

Another useful trick is to have a read through the existing entries on your chosen category and try to avoid repeating any of the keywords used there as this could end up with your site getting rejected because there are overlapping services being offered.

So, what are the three main reasons for a site getting rejected from DMOZ?
1. Your site does not represent the category it was submitted for. This is a very common fault.
2. Your site lacks adequate or unique content and is filled with broken link errors or is labelled as `under construction`
3. Your site`s content is replicated within a URL already listed in DMOZ

So, the secret to getting good Google search results is simple. It`s quality and relevance and getting relevant links and you will be better able to attract more links for your website promotion by getting listed on DMOZ. But like all modern search engine criteria, your content must be fresh and original and highly relevant to your niche market. You also need to ensure that there are no spelling errors or broken links in your navigation. These are simple SEO techniques that are often overlooked but will prove to be enormously important if you want to see successful search results.
